The paper discusses opportunities and challenges of social media and social media analytics for the purpose of policy and decision making. The EU-FP7 ICT project UniteEurope is presented as an innovative on-going research and development project that combines the expertise and perspectives of technical practitioners, researchers and policy makers for elaborating a scientifically based social media analytics tool.
